Light Bulb Ban Begins

Lightbulbs

On September 1st 2009 the ban on the manufacture and import of 100watt incandescent and non-clear (required to be class A)* light bulbs into the EU will come into force.

The banning of the 100watt incandescent bulb is merely the beginning of the end for our traditional light bulb, which has been part of everyday life for 140 years. The next milestone along this road will be the ban on 75watt bulbs (except those above class C)* from September 2010, being shortly followed by 60watt light bulbs (except those above class C)* from September 2011 and with the final nail in the coffin being delivered in September 2012 for all clear incandescent bulbs that do not meet class C and above.

This may sound like a major upheaval for the lighting industry, however huge advances in light bulb technology with the introduction of the HaloLux Classic ES", "EcoClassic30" and "MasterClassic EcoBoost" have enabled most light fixtures to remain in operation for many years to come.

Further regulations will come into place in 2016 requiring yet more energy saving requirements.

*     Class C lamps have a 25% energy saving on conventional incandescent bulbs.
